Raobaern
Overly-Agreeable Shopkeeper
”Of course I can sell you one! It just isn’t available quite yet… it has to be priced… after it gets inspected… after it arrives… after I order it.”
Services: Raobaern sells a variety of fine wares both magical and mundane. His specialties are minor wondrous items, adventuring gear, rations, baking supplies, and high-quality housewares. He likes to claim he can always find something a customer wants, even if it’s occasionally not what they initially came in for.
Boon: Raobaern can find an item not currently available in the town but below the town’s purchase limit within 1d10 days and provide it for sale at market price by calling in favors.
Starting Attitude: Raobaern starts with an attitude of friendly toward most PCs, though he becomes anxious (treat as indifferent) around male knights, guards, soldiers, and most fighters and rogues, as well as female scholars and wizards.
Impression: Raobaern always greets new customers with a jovial laugh and a firm handshake which often turns into a hug. He has little sense of personal space, and must constantly remind himself not to stand so close as to make customers uncomfortable. He also has a problem saying “no” even when it’s misleading to say “yes”; he simply hates to bring anyone down by denying them or falling short of their expectations. When he must respond in the negative, he couches it in terms that make it sound positive, at least at first. He will never say, “That item is illegal here,” when he can say, “I can get it for you… just as soon as the laws change,” not with sarcasm, but out of a genuine awkward desire to sound positive. What he lacks in tact, however, he makes up for in effectiveness. Although a shop such as his can rarely find everything aspiring adventurers desire, he usually knows where such items can be found or how to improvise a good stopgap for the need from among the items he does have on hand.
Personality: Eternally bright and cheery, Raobaern is generally seen by his customers and neighbors as either a whimsical ray of sunshine or a creepy enigma. He simply enjoys the feeling of seeing a really special bit of magic get into the hands of a person who will appreciate it.
Background: Raobaern avoids bringing up his background whenever possible. He had a very sheltered childhood, with his parents keeping him indoors and away from all manner of danger. His only reprieve from constant parental control was among the magical baubles the family sold, which he managed to experiment with at great length. His parents’ harshness has left him a bit anxious around male warriors, who remind him of his father, and female scholars, who remind him of his mother.
Gossip: A finely-dressed woman from a distant land recently came through town looking for cursed magic items. None of the normal venders were willing to assist her, but some suspect that Raobaern could not resist her relentless demands. If so, there is no telling the how guilty he feels for aiding another person’s foul deeds (Diplomacy DC 25 or helpful).
