Behind the Spells: Darkness

Behind the Spells: Darkness is the next issue in a continuing series of supplements by Bret Boyd and Tricky Owlbear Publishing that explores the fictional origin of beloved spells from the D&D game.

In these release the narrator, a gold dragon named Macolt Alberiim, returns to the story of the druid named Saegem who developed the first spell. It is a cautionary tale of hubris and pride that establishes darkness as the first spell that inspired evil magicians in centuries to come. The origin is well-developed and pokes fun as changes in the spell across editions of the game.

From a mechanical basis, there are two spell secrets, a metamagic feat and a new spell. The secrets allow for enhancement and customization of the spell, the metamagic allows you to lace your spells with darkness and the new spell allows you to shroud your opponents in shadow. As a DM, I ask, will this material allow me to screw with my players and I think I can use all four pieces to make their adventures more challenging. This is another entertaining and useful supplement from Tricky Owlbear Publishing.
